Lying to Tell the Truth: Being Creative With Your Nonfiction (CREATE A4)

james stafford

What’s the difference between creative nonfiction and journalism? Both strive to tell the truth, after all, but what is truth? When do the changes that we make to the actual events enhance the essential truth of a memoir piece, and when do we cross the line into fiction?

In this 45 minute session we will look at examples of lying to tell the truth in creative non-fiction and workshop some scenarios of our own. Representative examples may include Augusten Burroughs, Charles Bukowski,  James Frey, and Ernest Hemingway.
